Save the date messages for Indian weddings

A save-the-date goes out weeks or months before the invitation. Its only job is to put the date (and the city) in people’s calendars early enough to plan leave and travel. It should be short, should not promise details you do not have yet, and should say that the full invitation follows.

Below are a classic version, a fun one for friends, a destination-wedding version with travel notes, and Hindi wording. When you later publish your wedding website, send the same guests the full invite with the link.

Make it personal

Send it as a personalised invite, with RSVP built in

Paste a template as-is, or do what these templates keep pointing at: create your free Shaadify wedding website, add every event with venue and map, and send each guest their own WhatsApp link. It greets them by name, shows only the events they’re invited to, and collects their RSVP (yes/no/maybe, plus-ones, meal preference), no app, no account for guests.

Tips for this message

  • Send 2–3 months ahead (longer for destination weddings): the point is leave and travel planning.
  • Include the city even if the venue is not final; people need to know where they are travelling.
  • Do not ask for an RSVP in the save-the-date, that comes with the invitation.
  • When your wedding site is live, send the full invite with the link to the same list; guests then RSVP per event.

Questions about save the date messages

When should I send a save-the-date for an Indian wedding?

About 2–3 months before the wedding, or 4–6 months for destination weddings and guests travelling from abroad. The full invitation follows 3–4 weeks before the events.

What should a save-the-date message include?

The couple’s names, the date (or date range for multi-day weddings), the city, and a line saying the formal invitation will follow. No venue, dress code or RSVP is needed at this stage.

Can I send these invitations on WhatsApp with an RSVP?

Yes. Copy any template into WhatsApp as-is, or create a free Shaadify wedding website and send each guest a personalised link: it opens inside WhatsApp, shows every event with venue and timing, and lets guests RSVP per event (yes/no/maybe, plus-ones, meal preference) without installing anything.
