Engagement, roka and sagai invitation messages

Engagement functions go by many names, roka, sagai, ring ceremony, nischitartham, and range from a small family gathering to a full-scale evening. The invitation should name the function the way your family does, make clear it is the engagement (not the wedding), and carry the essentials.

Use the families’ version for relatives, the couple’s version for friends, and the Hindi one for family groups. If the wedding date is already fixed, a single line announcing it (“wedding to follow on [Date]”) is welcome; if not, leave it out.

Make it personal

Send it as a personalised invite, with RSVP built in

Paste a template as-is, or do what these templates keep pointing at: create your free Shaadify wedding website, add every event with venue and map, and send each guest their own WhatsApp link. It greets them by name, shows only the events they’re invited to, and collects their RSVP (yes/no/maybe, plus-ones, meal preference), no app, no account for guests.

Tips for this message

  • Name the function the way your family uses it, roka, sagai, ring ceremony, and say “engagement” in brackets for guests from elsewhere.
  • If the wedding is already fixed, one line with the date helps guests plan leave; if not, don’t hint.
  • Engagements are often the first event with the other family present: a short, formal message from both families reads well.

Questions about engagement invitation messages

What do you write in an engagement invitation message?

That it is an engagement (or roka/sagai/ring ceremony), whose engagement it is with whom, the hosts, the date and time, the venue with a map, and how to RSVP. Optionally, the wedding date if it is fixed.

Should the engagement invite come from the parents or the couple?

Traditionally from the parents or both families. Couples usually send their own message to friends. Both can point to the same event page and RSVP.

Can I send these invitations on WhatsApp with an RSVP?

Yes. Copy any template into WhatsApp as-is, or create a free Shaadify wedding website and send each guest a personalised link: it opens inside WhatsApp, shows every event with venue and timing, and lets guests RSVP per event (yes/no/maybe, plus-ones, meal preference) without installing anything.
